BANGALORE: A single-judge bench of the Karnataka high court stayed
the state's notification to ban the sale of aerated drinks of cola
major Pepsi in hospitals and government offices on Monday. The ban,
however, will still be in force in schools and colleges.
Justice DV Shailendra Kumar, after hearing a petition from Pespico
India Holdings, passed an interim order partially staying the ban.
The next hearing is scheduled for September 25.
The JD(S)-BJP combine in Karnataka had banned the sale of 11 brands
of aerated drinks manufactured by Pepsi and its rival Coca-Cola in
government offices, hospitals and educational institutions in the
state, after it found pesticide levels beyond permissible limits on
samples tested at an accredited lab.
The government had filed cases against the cola majors at the small
causes court under the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act, 1954.
