Abuja , Nigeria - Nigeria has sued Coca Cola Nig. Ltd and the Nigeria
B ottling Company PLC over two unregistered consumer campaign programmes.
The government is asking a Federal High Court in the capital city
of Abuja t o ban the programmes entitled, ``Lift off and Win'' and
``Coke side of life'' re s pectively.
The suit was filed by the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF)
and Ministe r of Justice, Mr. Michael Andoakaa, on behalf of the Consumer
Protection Council (CPC).
The plaintiff is seeking an order of the court directing the companies
to with draw, from the Nigerian market, the promotion of their products
through the two m arketing creations, because the promotions were
in flagrant disregard for the la w s of the country.
"There exists a great potential for Nigerian consumers to be put in
harm's way if the CPC is not allowed to carry out its statutory functions
of verifying the authenticity of the claims made in the marketing
creations,'' he said.
Last week, the Nigerian Government also sued the British-American
Tobacco Plc. (BAT) and two other tobacco companies for N5.3 trillion
or US$ 42.4 billion for havoc done to under-aged smokers in Nigeria
