Hoshiarpur: Residents of various villages of the area have come up in protest against the proposed Coca-Cola factory being setup in 60 acres of land situated on the Hoshiarpur-Una Road near Mahilanwali village. The heads of various villages of area along with Veer Partap Rana, the coordinator of environmental NGO Safal Bharat Guru Parampra said if this factory was not stopped immediately by the administration, they would be compelled to adopt the path of struggle.

Rana and the president of Sarpanch Union Dharamvir along with others were addressing a press conference in the press club. They said earlier the residents of the area did not know about the harmful effects of the factory and when they come to know in this regard, the residents of area have decided to protest against it in unison. Rana said to prepare 750 ml of coldrink, the factory would be wasting around 3 liters of water. “They claim that for every litre of water pumped out, they will pump in 2.5 litres of water. But the question is that from where will that water come from when the rains have been scarce in all these years,”said Rana.

In 2011, the agriculture minister had also acknowledged that there is a shortage of water in Punjab and 80 per cent of the Punjab has already become a desert. He said despite this, factories are being setup and if it remains so, water level will deplete to such a level that people would have to long for a single drop of drinking water. On this occasion, the residents of the area and the heads of villages Bajwara, Jahankhelan, Chaggran and other villages said they would go to any extent to struggle against the setting-up of this factory.
