The Coca-Cola company is in crisis in India. A massive community led movement has emerged all across India to challenge the company for its crimes in India. One of Coca-Cola's single largest plants in India, in Plachimada in Kerala, has been shut down since March 2004 because of community opposition.

Coca-Cola in India is Guilty of:

Causing Severe Water Shortages for Communities Across India
Polluting Groundwater and Soil Around its Bottling Facilities
Selling Drinks with Extremely High Levels of Pesticides

A study funded by Coca-Cola and conducted by Coca-Cola's ally has confirmed in January 2008 that Coca-Cola contributes significantly to water shortages and pollution. The study has also recommended the closure of the bottling plant in Kala Dera.

Communities in India need the critical support of the international community right now to pressure Coca-Cola to do the right thing.

As you know, a pattern has emerged as a result of Coca-Cola's bottling operations in India. --Communities around Coca-Cola's bottling plants are experiencing severe water shortages --The groundwater and soil around Coca-Cola's bottling plants have been polluted --Coca-Cola products in the Indian market contain extremely high levels of pesticides An assessment paid for by Coca-Cola and conducted by your ally, the Energy and Resources Institute (TERI), has confirmed in January 2008 that your operations worsen water crises around your bottling plants and that Coca-Cola does not even meet its own (TCCC) waste management standards. Coca-Cola's indiscriminate practices in India are creating severe hardships for thousands of people across India, including loss of livelihood, a public health crisis, loss of food security and extreme poverty for many. Coca-Cola MUST act now to address these serious concerns. I am joining with the communities in India in demanding that Coca-Cola: 1. Shut down the bottling plants in Kala Dera and Mehdiganj immediately 2. Stop efforts to reopen its bottling plant in Plachimada, Kerala 3. Compensate community members affected as a result of water shortages and pollution 4. Clean up the contaminated groundwater and soil and recharge the groundwater 5. Set up a fund to re-train and re-locate workers laid off from bottling plants as a result of the bottling plant shutdowns 6. Admit liability for the long-term impacts from the exposure to toxic waste distributed by Coca-Cola and pesticides found in Coca-Cola products 7. Community groups in India can speak for themselves. As such, any negotiations and discussions on the Indian issues must include directly the affected communities and community groups, along with their designated representatives. Sincerely,
